Choosing the Perfect Gemstone: How to Design a Piece That Reflects Your Personality

But how do you make the right choice? Here are three key factors I always consider here at the Rei Design studio:
1. Durability and Hardness: Is it for Everyday Wear?
Before anything else, you must consider how often you plan to wear the piece.
For Everyday Wear: If you are looking for a ring to wear daily, I recommend gemstones with high hardness ratings, such as Sapphires or Rubies. These stones are much more resistant to scratches and daily wear-and-tear.
For Statement Pieces: If the jewelry is intended for special occasions or occasional use, you have the creative freedom to choose more delicate, unique gemstones.
2. Brilliance and Clarity: Playing with Light
Sometimes, clients desire breathtaking brilliance without the premium price tag of rare stones.
Smart Alternatives: Gemstones like White Topaz are a fantastic option to create a sophisticated sparkle in modern, minimalist designs. Since my design philosophy at Rei Design centers on "lightweight" elegance, pairing a clear, high-quality stone with a delicate gold structure creates a luxurious look without adding unnecessary weight.
3. Geometry and Stone Cut
As someone who works with specialized 3D design software (like Zbrush and Rhino and Matrix), the cut of the stone dictates the flow of my designs.
Classic cuts like the "Round Brilliant" fit seamlessly into most designs, but unique cuts like "Pear" or "Emerald" allow me to build more geometric, avant-garde structures around the stone itself.
Consult with Your Designer
Remember, a gemstone is not just a commodity; it should harmonize with your lifestyle and personal style. If you have a specific stone in mind or are undecided between a few options, I would love to help you find the perfect balance between beauty and functionality in your next custom piece.
